There are many varieties of squirrels found in the USA like eastern gray squirrels, red squirrels, Abert’s squirrels, fox squirrels, Arizona gray squirrels, Douglas squirrels, flying squirrels, northern flying squirrels, Humboldt’s flying squirrels, etc. flying squirrels live on nest trees. Some and squirrels dig the land and make a small portion to live. What Do Squirrels Eat? Squirrels also use this ground portion to keep warm in winter and store food. Squirrels like to live near veggies and fruit trees. You also noticed that squirrels holding and maunching happily with this delicious food. 

Do Squirrels Eat Vegetables?

Squirrels like some vegetable varieties and gardeners know it very well. If squirrels went on any leafy green like spinach, kale, chard, and lettuce, they would chow down because they like delicious vegetables like tomatoes, radish, squash, beans, peas, root plant, eggplant, cabbage, broccoli, carrot, asparagus, cauliflower, broccoli, and many others to fill their hunger. 

Do Squirrels Eat Cereals?

Squirrels like cereals are incorporated with corn and grains. Hex, shredded wheat grains, corn flakes, grape nuts, cheerios, and many other kinds of cereal squirrels like to eat. These contain sugar, which gives them enough energy to find food and store the food for later.

Cheese 

Squirrels like to eat cheese when people go out in parks for a picnic and outdoor dinner and lunch. Chipmunks also eats all kinds of savory treats which humans leave behind while eating in restaurants and outdoors. Squirrels are fond of cheddar cheese, mozzarella, and parmesan cheese.

Nut

If you live or pass near the nut trees, the chances are good to see squirrels munching around these trees to get nuts. They get one nut to eat and two or three to store for later. Squirrels can climb easily on trees to get the nuts. You can rape the steel paper around the tree trunks to avoid the climbing of squirrels on the trees. Nut eating habit of squirrels is also beneficial for trees because while eating nuts, they spread nuts seeds far and wide, which help to protect the plant species. 

Squirrels love nuts. They collect and eat walnuts, hazelnuts, pistachio, cashew, chestnut, hickory nuts, pine nuts, macadamia, and pecans. Nuts are a great source of fat and protein for squirrels. 

Birdseed 

Most bird watchers and bird lovers supply the seed grain to birds, but of course, squirrels also eat these seed grains to fill their hunger. Even while birds are present, these naughty squirrels don’t hesitate to get these bird seeds and fill their bellies with readily available snacks that humans provide birds to show their love for them. These seeds contain some squirrels’ favorite grains like wheat and nuts.

Insect

If there are no nuts available, the squirrels start eating insects, including caterpillars, larvae, grasshoppers, injured butterflies, winged bugs, and many others. Squirrels get proteins by eating them.

Fungi

Squirrels love fungi and mushrooms. In forests, they found many fungi like acorn truffles, oysters, truffles, mushrooms, and many more. Sometimes squirrels leave fungi and mushrooms to let them dry and eat them later.  Squirrels also eat lichens which are present on most mature trees. 

Eggs

When other foods are hard to find, squirrels depend upon animal eggs. The squirrels steal robin eggs, blackbird eggs, and much other bird’s eggs. Squirrels can also eat hatchlings, young birds, and baby birds that have fallen from the trees and nests. 

Plant material

Squirrels can eat leaves, stems, seeds, roots, and anything they think has nutritional value. They also eat new curled leaves, trim bushes, herbs, fruits, vegetables, and nuts, so they also eat plant seeds like sunflower seed, safflower seed, pumpkin seed, poppy seeds, and many more seeds. I am surprised to see squirrels, plant blooms, and petals of passionflower and other plant bulbs. 

Dog and cat food

The squirrels have few strange habits, such as eating cat and dog food. They can eat it and take some pieces to store for later. They eat wet cat food and cans of dog food, which are not suitable for them.

Do Squirrels Eat Scraps and waste?

Take out your garbage from last night’s dinner party. I just kept the remnants of food in a nearby park and noticed that, like other scavengers, the squirrels also eat the remaining cake pieces, sandwiches, and pizza crust. They also consume and decompose our food waste. In addition, squirrels can also digest sugary and unnatural saturated food.

Food That Squirrels can’t eat. 

I wonder about squirrels’ eating habits, and it will surprise us if they skip eating something. Fortunately, some foods like raw onion, ginger, garlic, and various spices, including pepper, jalapeno, chilies, serrano pepper, and many others. They also avoid dairy products, chocolates, and junk food.
